BLDC Motor Design Engineer Intern – Drone Propulsion
Luxembourg,
Luxembourg
AP LUX S.A. is a Luxembourg-based technology company developing advanced electromechanical propulsion systems for unmanned aerial vehicles. Operating at the intersection of propulsion, aerodynamics, and product innovation, we are building cutting-edge solutions for the future of autonomous aerial systems.
To support our R&D projects, we are looking for an engineering intern to join our team in Luxembourg and contribute to the development of BLDC motors for light and medium-sized UAVs. You will work on real products, from first calculations and design through prototyping and bench testing. Motivation and willingness to learn matter more to us than prior industry experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal design of BLDC motors for UAV propulsion
- Perform motor sizing and design calculations (magnetic circuit, windings, losses, efficiency, temperature rise)
- Run or support simulations of motor performance, thermal and structural behaviour
- Create CAD models and 2D drawings and support design iterations towards manufacturing
- Build and test prototypes, analyse test-bench data and propose design improvements
- Work with the R&D, industrialisation and electronics teams on motor, propeller and ESC integration
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Currently pursuing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field
- Solid fundamentals in electromagnetism, mechanics, physics and heat transfer
Interest or basic exposure in one or more of the following areas:
- Electric machines and BLDC motors principles
- Structural mechanics and strength of materials
- Thermal analysis
- FEM simulations
Working knowledge of:
- CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar)
- MATLAB / Simulink, Python, or equivalent
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
- Hands-on attitude and willingness to work on real engineering challenges
- Fluent English (our working language), any other language is a plus
Nice to Have
- Exposure to simulation tools (ANSYS, Motor-CAD, JMAG)
- Basic understanding of motor control and ESC (e.g. FOC)
- Hands-on prototyping or lab testing experience – student projects, Formula Student, drone or robotics clubs all count
Personal Attributes
- Curious, proactive, and eager to learn
- Rigorous and detail-oriented
- Comfortable with open-ended problems
- Good communicator in an international team
What We Offer
- Direct contribution to real drone propulsion development projects
- Hands-on involvement from concept to prototype and testing
